"Black Dog Syndrome"
Overcoming "Black Dog Syndrome": Why Black Dogs Deserve the Spotlight on October 1st
Every year on October 1st, dog lovers across the country celebrate National Black Dog Day. If you thought this had something to do with Halloween or superstitions that is not why we are celebrating Black Dogs. While it’s a wonderful excuse to share photos of our favorite dark-furred companions, the day was originally created to shine a light on a real and persistent issue in pet rescue: Black Dog Syndrome.
Whether you currently share your home with a shiny black rescue, are considering adoption, or simply love dog advocacy, here is why black dogs deserve extra love this October—and how we can help them shine.
What is "Black Dog Syndrome"?
"Black Dog Syndrome" (or Black Dog Bias) is a phenomenon recognized by animal shelters and rescue organizations worldwide. Statistics show that black dogs—regardless of breed, size, or temperament—tend to stay in shelters longer and have lower adoption rates than dogs with lighter or multi-colored coats.
While it might sound hard to believe, rescue staff regularly observe black dogs getting overlooked in kennels. But why does this happen?
-
The "Hard to Photograph" Challenge: In today’s digital age, most adoptions begin online with a photo scroll. Black fur absorbs light, making it harder to capture clear facial expressions or subtle eye movements in standard shelter lighting. I know that out of the 3 dogs I have at home the little black Scottish Terrier is the hardest to photograph and his reclusive personality is only one of the issues. A dog’s expressive face is often what creates an instant emotional connection with potential adopters. When their eyes are hard to distinguish in the pictures those expressions get lost.
-
Kennel Lighting: Deep inside shelter runs, darker dogs can blend into the shadows, making them appear less visible or interactive when visitors walk past.
-
Outdated Pop Culture Tropes: Superstition does play a role here too. For decades, movies, folklore, and media have occasionally depicted large black dogs as mysterious or intimidating, creating subtle, subconscious biases and even fears.
The Reality: Big Personalities Behind Dark Coats
Anyone who has ever been loved by a black dog knows that their coats are where the mystery ends. Behind that sleek dark fur is the exact same loyalty, goofiness, warmth, and love as any other dog.
The Black dog comes in so many breeds with so many personality traits. The Black Lab, Rottweiler, multitude of Terriers, Cocker and other Spaniels and Skiperkees and the ever popular French Bulldog. The size and personalities are endless and the dogs can be quite beautiful. Their dark coats make their warm eyes pop, and there is nothing quite like watching a shiny black coat gleam in the autumn sunlight!
3 Ways You Can Celebrate & Support Black Dogs
Whether you own a black dog or simply want to advocate for rescue pups, here is how you can make a difference this National Black Dog Day:
1. Master the Art of Black Dog Photography
If you have a black dog at home (or volunteer at a local shelter), try these quick photo tips to capture their best angle:
-
Use Natural Indirect Light: Outdoor shade or golden hour lighting brings out detail in dark coats without harsh glare.
-
Focus on the Eyes: Catching the reflection of light in their eyes brings their face instantly to life.
-
Use Colorful Backgrounds & Accessories: Bright bandanas, vibrant collars, or colorful backdrops make dark fur stand out beautifully.
2. Share and Amplify Shelter Listings
Take a moment on October 1st to visit your local shelter's website or social media page. Share photos of black dogs currently waiting for forever homes. A single share on social media can help a hidden pup get noticed by their future family!
3. Wear & Share Your Advocacy
Show off your pride for dark-coated pups! Celebrating specific dog breeds and rescue advocacy is a wonderful way to spark conversations with fellow dog lovers at the park or on walks.
